What is woonhaven?

Woonhaven is a personal project I started in 2024. I was hoping to design something that would help students find housing faster. A lot of websites today have a paywall you need to pay to get in, and once you are actually in, you get ads from private companies for which you have to pay again in order to find what they are advertising. This is not handled correctly in my opinion and so I wanted to make a website that is advertised for students, made by students and made for students.

The Branding

The logo I made was a mix between image and type. I wanted the logo to be a character. Who could be used as a design element throughout the design. The character next to the logo is happy, since he just found a house at Woonhaven.

The character is made up of the idea of people and living, I first started with a house of course, as most people do during designing and finally thought of removing the roof and using it as a base for the body. So the body is made out of two roofs. Then I added a circle above to make it into a person.

Now that I made the character I was able to add a type to it. I knew I wanted the name to be Woonhaven. A mix between “Woon” A dutch word for “Living” and since I am residing in the “Randstad” of the Netherlands there are TONS of docks around us. “Haven” means shipyard but in English it can also mean “Haven” as in a safe place. I wanted a type that gave a feeling of trustworthiness, something with a little quirk and something that represents the “Dockiness” of the randstad.

After all of that, I just needed some colors, and to finish the trustworthiness look, I chose to work with blue and orange. It gives a strong feeling of professionalism. Orange also for the dutch country since orange is seen as a national color and finally blue was chosen to be a strong background color which works very dependably. At first I had a softer orange, less neon colored. But I wanted a color to really pop out of the design, so I made the orange a bit heavier by upping its contrast and the blue’s I changed to make them a bit darker. The lighter blue was also changed in order to be less noticeable on the dark blue.

Webdesign

Once I finished the branding for Woonhaven, I was able to make designs with it. I decided to design a website for students to connect, create events, and have  evenings for interviewing new candidates in the flesh. The website is as accessible as possible through creating an account and being able to share housing listings, connect with people so two can try and get a place together and what they would be most suited for & you are able to share leads on the site through your account. Got word of a great anti-squatter place to stay while finding something more permanent? Share it with the rest of the class! Literally.

Graphic design

Quickly putting my work in mockups you can see the potential of the branding that I’ve designed. A homepage with information about woonhaven. Also a poster showing the text “Still searching for a space to live? Come take a look at woonhaven!” with practical information on the bottom and a qr-code in order to send someone straight to the website.
